چکیده

Entorhinal cortex is implicated in coding the location of spatial cues: a new study has found that distinct regions of entorhinal cortex respond differentially to distal versus local cues when these cues are rotated in conflict with one another.

The role of landmarks and boundaries in the development of spatial memory.

It has been suggested that learning an object's location relative to (1) intramaze landmarks and (2) local boundaries is supported by parallel striatal and hippocampal systems, both of which rely upon input from a third system for orientation. However, little is known about the developmental trajectories of these systems' contributions to spatial learning. The present study tested 5- and 7-year...

Memory for spatial location: role of the hippocampus in mediating spatial pattern separation.

A paradigm based on measuring short-term memory for spatial location information as a function of spatial similarity between distal cues was developed to examine the role of pattern separation in the modulation of short-term memory for spatial information. A delayed-match-to-sample for spatial location task using a dryland version of the Morris water maze was used to assess spatial pattern sepa...

Surgical treatment outcome of giant cell tumor of distal ulna: En bloc resection vs. curettage and bone graft

Background: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign neoplasm with local aggressive behavior. Distal ulna is a very rare place for GCT. Published studies have mainly focused on case reports, and thus there is no consistent treatment strategy for this tumor at this location. This retrospective study was conducted to evaluate the oncological and functional results of 2 di...

Beyond memory, navigation, and inhibition: behavioral evidence for hippocampus-dependent cognitive coordination in the rat.

Injecting tetrodotoxin (TTX) into one hippocampus impaired avoidance of a place defined by distal cues while rats were on a slowly rotating arena. The impairment could be explained by a deficit in memory, navigation, or behavioral inhibition. Here, we show that the TTX injection abolished the ability of rats to organize place-avoidance behavior specifically when distal room and local arena cues...

Remembering to learn: independent place and journey coding mechanisms contribute to memory transfer.

The neural mechanisms that integrate new episodes with established memories are unknown. When rats explore an environment, CA1 cells fire in place fields that indicate locations. In goal-directed spatial memory tasks, some place fields differentiate behavioral histories ("journey-dependent" place fields) while others do not ("journey-independent" place fields). To investigate how these signals ...
